YANG – originally the sunny side of the mountain – implies the principle of the sun, the part of the active, the male, the expanding, the giving away, the light and warmth.
YIN – originally the shady side of the mountain – represents the principle of the moon, the passive, the contracting, the receiving, the shade and coolness.
Both terms represent two opposite principles which we find in all sections of the Chinese philosophy. The transition between YIN and YANG is fluid. YIN contains at least a little bit of YANG and vice versa. YIN and YANG have their source in one origin and from there they produce the enormous variety of phenomenon. Another differentiation of YIN and YANG is the 5-ELEMENT-THEORY.
